Early life and education

Brahma was born in the Boragari village of Dotma, a small township in the Kokrajhar district of Assam, India. He was the son of Mr. Monglaram Brahma and Ms. Lefsri Brahma. He was the fifth, and youngest, child. He was called "Thopen" during his childhood. He grew up in poverty.

From 1963, Brahma studied at various schools, including Dotma High School, Kokrajhar High School, and, in 1973, at Sakti Ashram High and Vocational School under the guidance of Swamiji. In 1975, he passed the matriculation examination in the first division with letter marks in Mathematics. 


Thereafter he obtained a BSc with an honors degree in Physics from Cotton College[citation needed] before enrolling at Gauhati University in 1981 for his MSc degree. Brahma also worked as a graduate science teacher at the Nehru Vocational High School in Gossainichina and studied for a BA at Kokrajhar College during that period. He obtained his BA in 1985 and his MSc in 1986.


Brahma was elected as the President of the Goalpara District Students Union in 1978–79. He was vice president of the All Bodo Students Union between 1981–1983 and president from 1986. Through this body, he worked for the education and well-being of the community, which he believed to be losing its culture. Under his leadership, the ABSU agreed to include political issues as part of its agenda to give political maturity to the students.

Upendra Nath Brahma was born in Kokrajhar, a town in the BTAD area, and completed his education at B Barooah College in Guwahati. He was a social activist from his early days and was associated with the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), which was formed in 1967 to protect and promote the cultural and linguistic identity of the Bodo people. He was also involved in various other social and political organizations.

In 1985, Upendra Nath Brahma founded the Bodo Security Force (BSF), which later became the Bodo People's Front (BPF), a political party that aimed to secure the rights and welfare of the Bodo people. The party came to power in the Bodoland Territorial Council in 2005 and remained in power until 2020.

Upendra Nath Brahma was a prominent voice for the Bodo people's demands for statehood and an autonomous region, which led to the creation of the Bodoland Territorial Council in 2003. He played a significant role in the peace talks between the government of India and the Bodo Liberation Tigers, which led to a ceasefire agreement in 1993.


Upendra Nath Brahma passed away on May 1, 1990, due to a heart attack. His contributions to the social and political rights of the Bodo people continue to be remembered and celebrated.
