Tangla:  In general, you should avoid touching a wild turtle, since it may carry salmonella, which can make humans sick. But if you cannot stop yourself from giving these reptiles a snack, it is OK to feed most wild turtles carrots, romaine lettuce, apples, and bananas, according to Total Tails.

Terrestrial turtles also eat a variety of foods, from earthworms, grubs, snails, beetles, and caterpillars to grasses, fruit, berries, mushrooms, and flowers. Both aquatic and land turtles have been known to eat carrion (decaying flesh) when it's available.

Here are a few of the pond turtle's favorite foods:

  • Insects: spiders, beetles, millipedes, grasshoppers, flies, aquatic insects, larvae, snails.
  • Amphibians: frogs, toads, newts, salamanders.
  • Crustaceans: crawfish, freshwater crabs.
  • Annelids: earthworms, leeches.
  • Aquatic plants and algae.
  • Fish.
Plant-based food sources for your pet turtle should mostly be leafy greens like collards, dandelions, and mustard greens. Some of these vegetables, such as chives, parsley, and spinach, contain high levels of chemicals called oxalates, which you should avoid.

Most (80-90%) of the plant material fed to box turtles should be vegetables and flowers, and only 10-20% should be fruit. As a rule, dark, leafy greens should make up the largest part of the diet. Yellow, red, and orange vegetables can also be included.

Feeding wild-caught fish and amphibians are not recommended, as they may contain parasites and other infectious organisms that may affect the turtle. Raw meat, fish, or chicken from the grocery store does not contain a balance of calcium and phosphorus for a turtle and is not recommended as a food source for turtles.

Most semiaquatic and aquatic turtles, like red sliders, painted turtles, and pond turtles, are omnivores, which means they eat a combination of animal protein and vegetables.
