Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was an Indian Independence activist, Islamic theologian, writer, and senior leader of the Indian National Congress. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad played a vital role in shaping the education system of India. He always emphasized on Girl's education and free compulsory education for all children under the age of 14.
He is commonly remembered as Maulana Azad; the word Maulana is an honorific meaning 'Our Master' and he had adopted Azad (Free) as his pen name. His contribution to establishing the education foundation in India is recognized by celebrating his birthday as National Education Day across India.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was posthumously awarded India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 1992.
