The domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica or Columba livia forma Domestica) is a pigeon subspecies that was derived from the rock dove (also called the rock pigeon). The rock pigeon is the world's oldest domesticated bird.

Pigeons also make surprisingly good pets. They are highly intelligent homing birds, typically with a calm, mild disposition. “Pigeons are probably the safest, least problematic pet anyone could have,” Ms. Young said.

Diseases associated with pigeon droppings include Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis, and Psittacosis. You can become infected with these diseases by breathing in the dust that is created when cleaning droppings. The risk of pigeon-related diseases is rare.

Pigeons bond easily with humans, especially those that feed them, and a tamed pigeon, kept alone, will become a faithful and loyal companion to its human. Maintaining a mated pair is not necessary, and unless you are racing or showing them, you probably don't want any extra birds.

A person is happy when she has food to go around, clean water to drink, a mate to partner with, and caring people like you around.

Allow him to come out of the crate, preferably in an enclosed space such as a small room. If you repeat this daily, your pigeon will become calmer, and eventually, you will be able to handle it. Spend time every day handling your pigeon; this will allow you to bond.

Pigeons are smart, easy-going birds that quickly learn household routines. They do fine in homes with other pets and can live peacefully and unafraid with dogs and cats as long as they are kept safe.
